The EVA Cashless Vending Specification specifies a minimum set of requirements to be supported by Vending Machines, Cashless Readers and Electronic cash schemes to ensure mutual compatibility.
The specification covers 2 readers, one for table-top machines, and one for stand-alone machines as well as their mounting position. The specification was discussed with international card schemes and was widely commented by the industry. The international card schemes have welcomed this specification and recommended that it applies to other UPoS (Unattended Point of Sale) such as parking machines.
A position paper, defining the vending industry requirements, accompanies the Cashless specification and covers the key issues that relate to the industry, such as a transaction time of less than one second or the facilitation of the certification procedure via self-certifying.
In the future, more vending machines will be ready to accept cashless and readers will offer both closed site functionality and compatibility with 'classical' chip cards. The EVA hopes that the international card schemes and their member banks introduce lower costs in order to become more attractive to operators.
