Vending and healthy lifestyles
In recent years, there has been a growing concern that the proportion of overweight and obese Europeans has reached alarming levels. Authorities are concerned at the public health costs resulting from overweight conditions (diabetes II, cardiovascular diseases, etc). Another concern is the proportion of young people that are overweight and obese and whose life expectancy may soon fall below that of their parents'.
In reaction to that, the WHO (World Health Organisation), the EU and national governments have decided to react by adopting strategies on diet, physical activity and health.
The food industry has been put at the centre of all actions and the vending industry has decided to be proactive in this area. The EVA is a founding member of the platform on DPAH (Diet, Physical Activity and Health), within which it has taken commitments with respect to vending in schools: "Vending in Schools: a Matter of Choice - European Best Practice Guidance on Diet and Nutrition for the National Vending Industry Associations".
Below are a number of initiatives taken by the EVA and EVA members in different areas, including product reformulation, physical activity programmes and the promotion of a wider range of products.
